ABOUT THis project
Land management and restoration in a 400-acre tract of land in the foothills, on the eastern side of the Western Ghat mountains. The land borders the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. It lies in the rain-shadow, where the expected natural vegetation would be a cusp between moist-deciduous, dry-deciduous and savanna-woodland ecosystems. It was highly degraded by overgrazing, fires and erosion when we started in 1999. In ten years, we stopped grazing and annual fires, and brought erosion under control. The vegetation was regenerating well, and created habitat of superlative quality. Bird and animal species increased exponentially in number. The project however, was sold in 2009.
These are some memories we’ve collected of our project 🙂
