ABOUT THis project

This 70-acre tract of land in the foothills, south of where the Palani Hills meet the Western Ghats, was acquired by Gaia in 2011. The project is a managed regeneration. We started out with a baseline vegetation survey in 2012, which we intend to repeat every 10 years. The land is managed overall through prevention of grazing and annual fires. Additionally, applied nucleation in selected pockets of land, where we remove invasive species to promote regeneration of native trees and vegetation. A small tract of land was also planted as a mother-plant nursery. From 2021, we intend to start a field experiment in watershed hydrology, in partnership with the Water Institute of SSET, Kerala.
